History of the Temple

Sri Kaleeshwarar temple is located in Seettanchery alias Sri Krishnapuram village which is situated on the bank of River Palar flowing in Coromandal region. It is said that the deity appeared on its own as "Swayambu Lingam" and it was worshipped by Lord Krishna, Lord Kumaran, Pandavas and Saint Bharatvyas, in earlier period. It is stated that the present temple structure was built by a pious businessman who was trading in pepper, clove, elachi etc., and who, after his daily prayers to the deity, used to rest under the shade of "Manipunga" tree, the holy tree of the temple. On several occasions he seemed to have observed that the grazing cows of the area used to ease milk on the deity voluntarily as a way of offering prayers. It is said that one day Lord Siva appeared in his dream and ordered him to build a temple for the "Swayambu Lingam" over there. From that day onwards he seemed to have started earning plenty of money and built the present huge temple complex with granite blocks in over area of about five acres of land and started performing all "Poojas". It is in record that there are lot of immovable properties belonging to the temple. In spite of it, such a holy and magnificient temple which is said to grant boons to worshippers is in very poor and dilapidated shape.
